Malicious software, or malware, recently managed to infect Google, Yahoo and ValueClick Ad Network. How in the world did this happen? It is the largest site on the World Wide Web, and they are allowed to kill all the infected banner ads to run?
Banner ads were attacking some vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader PDF and Microsoft DirectShow. It has already been patched to prevent such attacks, but where there is a will there is a way, and someone has found a way. I can not imagine the joy felt when a hacker is able to pass one of the safest systems in the world, but he could not go skydiving or bungee jumping, right?
ScanSafe, which is a service that many companies use to prevent employees from visiting malicious Web sites and dangerous, said 11% of all pages that are blocked are the result of an infected banner ads. The infection is almost not recognizable as a "mistake", but unknown to those who are victims, Win32/Alureon installed. This opens a trojan virus backdoor on the infected computer. Some of the most commonly affected are the Drudge Report, horoscope.com, slacker.com and lyrics.com.
For most of us, is like talking to us in a foreign language. We understand the "malware" long, but when it comes to identifying and correcting the virus, we are not equipped to do so. Apparently, we should not feel so bad because some of the biggest names in the business to allow this little candy to escape their attention before the damage has already been done.
As much as I love and rely on my computer, I worried about it every day of infection. I agree with one of the most famous and update my anti-virus program every night if I have, but I was a victim of the virus that killed my hard drive and therefore I suffered from a loss of income and have to buy a new computer. I do not have time to deal with it anymore and I spent over $ 200.00 for a geek to fix the irreparable. Large companies are financially able to withstand the onslaught, but we, the young are those who are really suffering and we believe in "big dog" to protect us. In fact, I pay for the "big dog" to protect me.
Another thing that is true? I just got a debit card from my bank. It is not necessary, but only to the post office. I have not received an email telling me that it's coming and when I did not activate it right away I had a nasty surprise I buy the existing debit card was rejected because it n ' is good. I received it on Friday and my old card was rejected on Saturday. The reason? A number of debit cards has been compromised by some form of third party activity and I do my banking "support" for debit card and canceled my other other publishers. God thank you, I have my checkbook with me. I can not remember the last time I wrote a check. But the result is that I am not comfortable in the worst way. If I do not have my checkbook, I would not be able to pay the grocery bill. Now I have to go to someone that I leave automatically debit my account and make sure they have the right number of cards. I also have my old number stored in their practice "online" shopping and now I have to take my card every time until I memorize a new number. I even stopped adding my card number on a site like Amazon, so I'm not at risk for this stuff, and ... What's in it for me? In fact, because I have not been told who the "third party" is, I think I just have to cancel the direct debit and do it the old way, through my online bank account.
Yes, computers are here to stay and I am the one who uses mine for hours each day. I do all my banking online and most of my shopping online and get my income online. I did some research for family members, play games and do my taxes online. However, I hope and pray everyday that when I start my computer would start as it should and that some terrorists have not closed the entire network of bunkers in Afghanistan. This is how the world "computer". I think we may one day regret this technology, but for now I'll continue using it. I'm spoiled, after all.
