So you are considering buying a new computer ...
Where do you start? There are so many makes and models of computers available, and this can be a bit overwhelming when you start looking around.
How do you determine what kind of computer do you need? And perhaps more importantly, how do you decide what is the best value?
I have sold computers professionally for almost 20 years, and there are some "tricks of the trade" that the computer stores and salespeople use. Knowing these secrets can make your decision easier and will help you buy the computer for your needs.
A. Buy what you need, be a little more
One of the most important things you can do when you buy a new computer is make a list of things you'll use to. There are so many different models - with different capabilities - you can easily buy more, or less, that you need if you really do not.
If this is your first computer, it can be a little harder. Until you've used a computer, it is difficult to know exactly what you might want to do with it beyond the obvious, such as connecting to the Internet.
Anyway, you should think about some things you might want to do. Here are some options:
Connected to the Internet
Play a game
Digital Photography
The digital video
Types of documents
Accounting
Website design
Programming
Digital scrapbooking
Genealogy
Some of these things need more power than others. For example, the Internet connection does not really need much power. Even the most basic computer available will probably work well.
Digital video and many games require more power. If you do not get a fast enough computer with enough memory, you will be disappointed by the performance.
Knowing what you will use your computer to help your sales force, if they are on the phone, internet or standing in front of you, to recommend the best system for your needs.
Generally, you're always better off buying more power than you need, rather than less, but buying too can be a waste of money.
2. Warranty Considerations
Your computer warranty is one of the most confusing and obscure your purchase. Most manufacturers have reduced their customer service to the point where poor service has become a given.
The three most common options are invited, or postponement of producing deposit services.
The service may help but ask if you want to have to be available for a technician to come and diagnose your computer, and may be returned with the parties at a later date.
Carry in service is a good choice, but whether the factory authorized service center for warranty repair, and technicians are all certified.
Delivery of your computer to the service center can take some time - sometimes weeks. It also creates the risk that your computer will be damaged or even lost in shipping. In some cases, the manufacturer will even replace your computer with another device and send it back to you, not fix it. This can make you lose information in your system and having to reload all your software.
Another aspect of the guarantee is to find technical support. Find out if the computer manufacturer offers a toll free telephone number and that the quality of these services.
