Facebook has introduced its latest social media innovation – changing the e-mail addresses posted by users on their profiles, en masse and suddenly.

In the amendment, that took result on Monday, Facebook abruptly replaced the main points users had elected to accompany their account with addresses employing a "@facebook.com" convention.

Emails sent to the Facebook address find yourself within the site's messaging system, instead of users' email accounts.

Facebook allotted users an email address based mostly on their profile URL, if they'd elected to settle on one. Users while not a customized URL were instead issued with an email based mostly on their profile name, with the addition of a number of numbers.

The new contact details were automatically displayed on users' timelines, whereas the previous email addresses were hidden. Users got to undergo variety of stages to revive the previous details.  additionally to everybody receiving an address, we're conjointly rolling out a brand new setting that offers folks the selection to choose that addresses they require to indicate on their timelines.

Ever since the launch of timeline, folks have had the power to regulate what posts they require to indicate or hide on their own timelines, and these days we're extending that to different info they post, beginning with the Facebook address.

We shall gloss over the question of whether or not a "choice" extremely exists if a user isn't conscious of it.

In another user-friendly feature, most emails to the Facebook.com address are automatically filtered into the no-man's-land "other" section of Facebook messages, possibly never to be seen once more.

(Slate brought the hidden world of "other" messages into focus in December last year, however it's unlikely that every of Facebook's 900m users has scan that article.)
